Internet in China 2026: eSIM, Wi-Fi and Which Apps Won't Work
Content reviewed 2026-07-21
What's actually different
On mainland Chinese networks — including hotel Wi-Fi — many international services do not load: Google (Search, Gmail, Maps, Drive), Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, X and most Western news sites. Chinese apps replace all of them and work perfectly. The practical fix for travelers is not technical wizardry: it is choosing the right mobile data before you fly.
- Chinese apps (Alipay, WeChat, Amap, Trip.com) work on any network — the restrictions only affect foreign services.
- Hotel Wi-Fi is a local network: your blocked apps stay blocked on it, and speeds are often too slow for video calls anyway.
- Nothing can be installed or fixed after landing — app stores and download pages for the tools you'd need are unreachable. Prepare everything before departure.
Travel eSIM or roaming: the simple fix
Data on a travel eSIM or on your home carrier's international roaming is routed through a carrier outside the mainland, so Gmail, Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Maps normally keep working without any extra setup. This is why nearly every recent traveler recommends the same setup: a travel eSIM for data, plus your home SIM kept active for SMS codes.
- Buy and install the eSIM before you fly, and test that it appears in your phone settings; activate it on landing.
- Carrier-locked phones can't use eSIMs — check with your carrier early, or fall back to international roaming or a second phone.
- Expect occasional signal drops: toggling airplane mode or restarting the phone fixes most of them.
- Keep your home number reachable (roaming on, data off) — banks and booking sites will still text you verification codes.
The download-before-you-fly checklist
- Alipay set up with your card and passport verification done — it is the single most important app (payments, DiDi rides, metro codes).
- WeChat as backup payment and to message hotels; Amap (高德地图) for navigation; a translation app with offline Chinese downloaded.
- Screenshots saved offline: hotel name and address in Chinese characters, booking confirmations, arrival card QR, passport photo page.
- If work or study depends on specific services (video calls, cloud drives, AI tools), test them on your planned data setup during a layover — not after arrival.
App availability and eSIM performance change month to month; checked 2026-07-21. Re-verify with travelers' reports from the last few weeks before you fly.
