This hillside lane preserves the old city's relationship between stone steps, retaining walls, small courtyards and the Yangtze cliff. Walk downhill rather than treating it as a single photo stop; the route takes 60–90 minutes and includes uneven stairs.
Line 2 passes through a multi-storey building, but the station and building use separate structural supports to control vibration. Ride through once, then use the viewing platform below for the full relationship between train, building and steep slope. Allow 30–45 minutes.
Centered on the Yuwang Palace, whose origins reach back to the Kangxi era, this guild hall was founded in 1759 and expanded in 1846 to serve merchant and migrant communities. Compare the theatre gate, courtyards, timber halls and relief carvings; the migration and plaque museums explain how the buildings were used. Allow 90 minutes.
Across People's Square stand two kinds of public building. The 1954 People's Auditorium is known for its symmetrical colonnaded wings and blue-glazed dome; inside is a multi-tiered circular assembly hall under the dome (ticketed entry when no events are on). The Three Gorges Museum fills in geography and city history with permanent exhibitions on the Three Gorges, ancient Ba-Yu and Chongqing's urban development. Allow two to three hours for both.
At the tip of Yuzhong, the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet below a complex of eight towers linked by a horizontal skybridge. The public plazas give free river and bridge views; the indoor observatory is ticketed. Allow 60–90 minutes and expect long vertical circulation.
Baodingshan developed as a large Buddhist ritual complex from 1174 to 1252. Continuous cliff carvings connect doctrine with daily life; key works include the Thousand-Armed Guanyin, the Parental Kindness tableau and the Oxherding sequence. Treat it as a full day from central Chongqing.
The site carries the name of the old Hongya city gate; today's eleven-level commercial complex uses the spatial vocabulary of Chongqing stilt houses on a steep riverside cliff. The useful experience is the height difference between upper street and lower river road. Visit after dusk for 45–60 minutes.
Opened in 1987 as the first large passenger cableway across the Yangtze, this 1,166 m line has shifted from commuter transport to a sightseeing ride. Cabins cross from Changansi in Yuzhong to Shangxinjie on the south bank in about five minutes, with aerial views of the river, bridges and cliffside neighborhoods. It is now a ticketed attraction; queues are long at dusk and on holidays, so a one-way trip is enough if time is tight.
Guotai Arts Centre combines the Guotai Grand Theatre and the Chongqing Art Museum; outside, interlocking red-and-black rectangular members cantilever out, echoing traditional bracket sets but built in modern steel. Inside, the free art museum's galleries rotate themed shows of modern and local Chinese art — painting, printmaking and photography — so check the current exhibition first. About 30 minutes for the architecture, 60–90 with an exhibition; theatre performances are ticketed separately.
This former riverside port follows a steep main lane toward the Jialing River. Stone paving, narrow side lanes, timber shopfronts and courtyard buildings survive among heavy visitor commerce. Arrive early, leave the snack street for side lanes, and allow roughly two hours.
